"The Preston Lopez Show," a fixture since August 1997 on Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN), initially began as "Anythin' Goes Videos" hosted by J. Elle, also known as Preston Lopez. Starting with a focus on the latest Hip Hop and R&B videos and artist interviews, it later evolved into a more politically oriented program.
Preston shared, "In the beginning, it mostly was about the latest Hip Hop and R&B videos and interviewing the artists." However, during the first season, a shift occurred towards a more political tone. Preston noticed the impact of his content, realizing the potential negativity it was contributing. Motivated by a desire for positive change, he transitioned to covering protests, marches, and discussing community issues.
The show became a platform to enlighten, inform, and feature local talent acts. Preston utilized it to showcase his acting, cooking, singing, and more. The initial decade focused on addressing societal concerns and fostering positivity.
Preston Lopez continued, "The next 10 was another story." New episodes of "The Preston Lopez Show" air on Thursdays at 12:30 am, and Saturdays late night starting at 11:30 pm.
The beginning of season 8 came with a bang & a splash. The Preston Lopez Show took a turn for a sticky situation. it also came with a new tag line "finally a show you can masturbate to." The all new concept was a totally all nude sexy content with masturbation skits sexual humor, uncensored male and female strippers and semi porn scenes summer parades and everyone expressing themselves and a side of political activism. "the concept was simple I always started with some skimpy tight shorts then it will go to the latest clubs in New York City featuring male and female stripper. I'll do a recipe for The Sexy Drinks segments. "I remember going to the station and everybody was in awe like I was some sort of big shot because my show was on the top or close to the most watched shows on public access. I was elated and ashamed and embarrassed at the same time. one of the station managers said listen put anything you want on the air your show is a hit as long as their is no penetration you're good. I took that and ran naked with that. It was a good 10 year ride but yet again I felt like some of the message wasn't getting through like safe sex responsibility and respect for one another. on a side note I also had to let it go because of the barrage of unwanted attention I was getting. I could literally not go anywhere in NYC with someone shouting obscenity trying to grab my privates praising me and of course criticizing me. I just wanted to do my dog and pony show and stay home. - Preston Lopez said on The Faison Murphy Show.
In the year 2020 The Preston Lopez Show went back to the original concept of art music social & community issues but this time I am in clear control of the vision and legacy of the show. which now airs worldwide because of the internet. I no longer yearn for the thirst of the local fame and acceptance I first craved in 1997 when the show aired. I know we did a lot to give a voice to the unspoken give a platform to the poets lend a bullhorn to the racially profiled and showcase the people of the basement who were (and still are) prosecuted for their sexuality. -PL
